Four years later, the hospital had outgrown its
original quarters and in 1912, moved to the third floor of the Realty
Building on Main Avenue. That
building no longer stands. |
In 1924, the hospital again relocated and was designed to accommodate 46 beds. |
At the close of World War II, Gaston Post 23, American
Legion, initiated a drive to raise funds through public subscription to
purchase the City Hospital and enlarge it to meet the critical hospital
needs of the community. |
The name of the hospital was changed to Gaston Memorial Hospital in 1946, and a private not-for-profit corporation was formed under the North Carolina General Statutes; this corporation still exists today. | This building, located on
Highland Avenue and referred to for many years as the “old” hospital
was constructed in 1947. Gaston Memorial Hospital established a school of
nursing, which 307 students graduated before closing in 1973 |
As the need for hospital beds and facilities continued
to increase, the hospital relocated to its current site in 1973.
Today,
Gaston Memorial Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility, licensed to
operate 442 beds. |
In 1984, the hospital began a reorganization process and established a parent company, Gaston Health Care, Inc., with subsidiaries that allowed the hospital to enter into health care-related businesses. The reorganization was completed March 1, 1987. | Radiation
Oncology Center -- A radiation oncology center opened in 1989 to
provide state-of-the art radiation therapy for patients with cancer. |
Northeast
Tower --
A four-level addition to the hospital (three levels
above ground) was opened in 1992. |
Comprehensive
Cancer Center -- In 1993, Gaston Memorial became one of only seven
hospitals in North Carolina to earn a Community Hospital Comprehensive
Cancer Program designation from the American College of Surgeons. |
In 1994, a second linear accelerator was added to provide advanced treatment for cancer patients. |
Cardiac
Rehab Center
-- The Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, formerly
operated under the name “Healthplus,” became part of Gaston Health
Care in 1995. |
CaroMont
Heart Center, The Carolinas Heart Institute - Gastonia

With the addition of open-heart surgery to the hospital’s existing
array of cardiac services, Gaston Heart Center was formed in July 1998.
Southeast Expansion -- Gaston Memorial launched another major expansion in 1998. This project expands the main hospital building to the southeast, providing additional space for surgery, radiology, laboratories and support services. |
In February of 2000, Gaston Health Care was changed to
CaroMont Health. The new
name was created to better reflect the area served.

The
New Birthplace
Construction began
for the the spacious new Birthplace at Gaston Memorial. Features
include a 16-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, family dining area, play
area, resource center, and open-air courtyard.
