As a new graduate, we offer an excellent mentored new nurse graduate intern program to ensure your success as a Registered Nurse. The program provides a transitional clinical experience by incorporating the "ideas" of the nursing education with the "realities" of hospital nursing. You will be hired as an RN (must be listed on the Board of Nursing prior to starting), work as an RN, be paid as an RN, but not be left alone.
12 week Intership Program will allow time for classroom, clinical, and module participation.

- 42 beds 6 South Cardiopulmonary Medical Unit
- 42 beds 6 North Medical Services
On 6 South the most frequent diagnoses are CHF, COPD and pneumonia.
Frequent diagnosis on 6 North includes diabetes and congestive heart failure in addition to other general medical diagnosis.
NICHE - Nurses Improving Care of Health System Elders. Six North has a specialized hallway for the senior adult patient to enhance their ability to maintain independence and functional status while ensuring the patients receive the best care possible to meet their individual needs.

Human Motion Institute (HMI) Orthopedics and HMI Neuro Services
5 South

|
- HMI Neuro is an 18 bed unit
- HMI Ortho is a 22 bed unit
- 5 South is a 42 bed unit
Shared Governance and Family Centered Care are our Primary Focus.
HMI Neuro specializes in stroke care. the most frequent diagnoses are CVA, TIA, and craniotomy. The average LOS is 4 days.
HMI Orthopedic/Spine unit specializing in total joint replacement. The average length of stay is 4 days.
5 South is a 42 bed general surgery unit. The average length of stay os 3.5 days. Frequent diagnoses include peripheral vascular disease, major bowel procedures, urological, gastrointestinal, and thoracic surgical procedures.

The 3 South specialty unit provides individualized holistic care to patients and families who are experiencing cancer and renal disease to meet their special needs.

Critical Care Services

ICU, PICU, CCU, PCCU, SICU, CVSU, CVRU
Care Delivery Model accomplished by collaborative multidisciplinary team approach.
Critical Care Services provides intensive nursing care to the full spectrum of critically ill patients utilizing state-of-the-art technology and pharmacological "interventions". Frequent diagnoses include: neurological surgery/disorders, cardiac surgery/disorders, respiratory failure, renal failure, multi-system organ dysfunction, diabetes, thoracotomies and other medical/surgical diagnoses.

- Women and Children's Services
Comprised of the obstetrical, neonatal and pediatric programs. Our philosopy and practice is patient/family focused versus provider focused.
The Birthplace delivers approximately 3,000 babies per year and admits approximately 280 neonates to our NICU annually. The Pediatric Team cares for approximately 1,000 patients annually.
Our Intern Program offers New Nurse Graduates joining the WCHS team a menu of experiences that offers an individualized orientation program that includes exposure to all facets of our Women and Children's Health programs.

Emergency Services

- Caring for over 85,000 patients per year ranging from trauma to minor care. Computerized patient tracking system, clinical documentation and physician order entry. New Care Initiation Area and EMS Receiving to decrease patient wait times.
- Pursuing level III Trauma Center Designation. Phlebotomy, Transporters, Paramedics, Techs, Guest Services, Registration and Secretaries complete the patient care team.

31 beds adult, 13 beds adolescent, 9 beds pre-adolescent.
A six bed Psychiatric Suite in the Emergency
Department also provides emergency screening and assessment of psychiatric patients.

How early can I apply if I am graduating in May, August or December? As soon as possible! Please visit our website for a Registered Nurse - New Grad position and apply by completing an online application. If you are currently employed by Gaston Memorial Hospital, you will complete the online transfer form. If there are no posted positions for New Grads when you visit our website, please set-up a job agent so that you can be notified via e-mail when a position does become available. Remember, applications are not complete without two reference forms completed by your clinical instructors and an official transcript.
Can I check the status of my job application? Yes you can by visiting your profile online or by checking your email
How will I be contacted for an interview? If you are selected to interview, you will be contacted directly by the New Nurse Graduate Recruiter. You will then communicate which departments you may be interested in interviewing with.
What areas offer internships? With each internship date, varied departments may offer internships. New graduates may have an opportunity to start their career in Medical-Surgical, HMI-Ortho, HMI-Neuro, General Surgical, Critical Care, Emergency Department, and Oncology. Birthplace does offer internships, but typically only accepts New Grads for the summer internship. Psychiatry considers New Grads on an individual basis.
How long is the internship? The mentored internship is a total of 12 weeks. The program is a combination of classroom, clinical and module sessions.
Do you offer tuition reimbursement? If you are interested in returning to school to pursue an advance degree such as BSN/ MSN or related courses, we do offer tuition reimbursement. After your probationary period, we offer a $1000 tuition reimbursement for full-time employees and $500 for part-time employees per calendar year.
Can I work as an NAI or NAII while in nursing school? Yes, you can. We encourage students to apply with us while in nursing school. We try to offer NAI (PCA) or NAII (PCT) positions to students to accommodate their school schedule; however, you must be able to attend hospital orientation Monday-Friday from 8:15-5:00. This is a great opportunity for you to gain experience and to explore our organization.
